Downsizing a Home 101

Re-Feather Your Nest had the pleasure of presenting a seminar on downsizing a home to a full house at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge NJ. Fellowship Village is one of the premiere senior lifestyle communities in the Northeast. We were thrilled with the turnout and offered the attendees great transitioning tools they could use now or later when they were ready to downsize.

After a lifetime of accumulating, you’ve decided it’s time to downsize. But where do you begin?! We’re here to help. No need to be overwhelmed with what to keep and what to get rid of. We’ll assist you in this life changing event. We have simple and easy solutions to help you on your way.

Once you’ve made the decision to downsize a home, don’t get overwhelmed every time you walk into your basement or attic. You can scale down without anxiety or dread. It’s time for new beginnings to enjoy more time to play, travel, and pursue your interests, hobbies, family and friends.

Downsizing a home is a major life event. It is a time-consuming and exhausting challenge for anyone. Having experienced professionals to work with you through the transition will streamline the entire process. It’s also beneficial to have an objective specialist to help avoid the emotional drawbacks of parting with familiar, yet obsolete, possessions like the china and silver wedding presents, which once seemed so important to you, but don't anymore.

After the seminar, we had a Q&A segment. Everyone had questions. One person asked what she should do with all her signed paintings. “What do I do with the artwork I have no room for?,” she asked. We advised her that we would help her figure out what she really wanted and how to sell or donate the rest.

Another question posed by the attendees was regarding paint color. “I have gold and burgundy colored furniture that I want to keep when I downsize.” Our services include a color consultation where we work with you to come up with the right paint colors for your furniture and accessories.

Probably the most asked question about downsizing a home regarded what to keep and what not to. We work with you to organize and then scale back your belongings. We have a specific service called Resale Ready®. We will come to your home, and after discussing what you really want to take to your new home, we will prepare a written plan. Your Resale Ready® will provide you with detailed, quick, inexpensive suggestions on how to use what you already own to show your home in the best possible light. We will also help you decide what to donate and what to sell via an estate sale.

After the sale of your home, we will prepare a design plan for you incorporating your favorite items and suggesting other items to purchase to create a perfectly designed new home.

We will soon be wallpapering and painting. But just removing a few pieces and moving some others make a big difference.
